Mae Francis Moultrie was one of the first female Freedom Riders and the only African-American female Freedom Rider on the original #CongressofRacialEquality ride of May 1961.
Moultrie, a 24 year-old student at #MorrisCollege, joined the ride in Sumter, SC on May 11. She was a part of the group that was attacked in Anniston, Alabama on May 14. As a victim of acute smoke inhalation, she does not remember much of the attack.
After the ride, Moultrie felt compelled to continue her education. She also felt compelled to make the world a better place for others. In the years following, she has served as a missionary in Canada, Mexico, and Liberia. She has also become a minister, Reverend Mae Frances Howard.
It seems that while hate and injustice sought to overcome Moultrie in the 1961 attack, faith and forgiveness have become the driving forces of her life.
