This is a very short video that shows me slowly flipping through 8 pages of handwritten notes. This particular set of notes was for the interview I did of @madelynnsbakesale last year.
I also interviewed @lovncareskinoil and @turnerandaddie and another group of kids for an in-depth story for @washingtonparent magazine that was published in January 2020.
I spent roughly two hours with each group of kids, for roughly 8 hours, each of which produced anywhere between 6 - 10 pages of handwritten notes. That means for this one story, I had roughly 36 pages of notes from which to extract relevant details and write a compelling story.
When I conduct in-person interviews, I let my interviewees talk. I write everything down unless they ask me not to include something. People speak freely and feel comfortable sharing their successes, their projects, and their motivations.
It has been fulfilling interviewing both kids and adults for various stories over the last few years. I hope that by viewing this
short clip and by reading my description, you are able to get a glimpse into my world as a freelance writer.
Freelance writers, especially me, work very, very, very hard to get the interview, write notes, go home and write that story, do follow-up research, edit, and submit. .
