#Repost @the.autisticats • • • • • • I had very frequent meltdowns as a child, at least two times a week. They were severe and some lasted upwards of 3-5 hours. I would scream and cry, and sometimes be dragged out of public establishments by my parents. I was rarely the initiator of physical aggression, but when my parents came near me to remove me from an environment I would fight them to stay where I was. As I've gotten older, and since I've taken anxiety meds (which I started at age 11), the frequency of my meltdowns has decreased significantly. However, their nature has changed, and while didn't do SIB as a child, I now tend to hit myself and sometimes bite my hands or arms. Anyone other autistics have a special interest in certain foods? I’ve got a HEAVY orange juice addiction. Fresh squeezed of course. Does a body good and wakes me up better than caffeine ever did (I ditched coffee years ago, causes too much anxiety). I only have a $20/week habit at this point. 😁. . . . . #actuallyautistic #autismpride #autismlife #autismrocks #differentnotless #takeoffthemask #disabilityawareness #realshit #beauthentic #autismacceptance #autismblog #autismawareness #autismwarrior #autismloves #neurodiverse #meltdown #neurodiversity #abaisabuse #ableism #onthespectrum #aspie #aspergers #aspielife #autistic #autismsociety #sensoryprocessingdisorder #asd

I’ve been wanting to make a post about my autism. I was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder when I was 6, when I started primary school, and I never knew I was autistic until I brought up the subject to my mother when I was 10. She didn’t want to reveal it to me unexpectedly and scare me or anything like that. From there I began to learn why I had small difficulties with socialization, why I was so interested and focused on certain things I like, why I fidget when i’m anxious, why certain noises would be so irritating for me and many other stuff that helped me learn about myself. I don’t think me being on the spectrum isn’t a bad thing, nor a good thing. I just know it’ll always be apart of my life and I should be confident with it. There’s no cure for autism and there never will be, but if there was I wouldn’t want to be cured, because I’d lose a part of myself. I feel my autism has made me who I am. Me having autism doesn’t make me dumb, retarded or a little slow, I’m still a person. The sad thing to me though is that people don’t realize how we’re like other people, we just have a disorder that we were born with. People shouldn’t be ‘aware’ of autism, because that’s like being aware of some disease or whatever like cancer and that it should be ‘cured’. People should accept autism and that it’ll be apart of some people’s lives, and that you’ll always come across a friend on the spectrum. The reason why I made this post is so that my friends, both online and in real life, can understand and learn something about me. I’m happy with my autism if people treat me nicely and respect me, if people aren’t ignorant or make offensive jokes about autism around me (for example, stop fucking using ‘autistic’ as an insult), and if people don’t make me feel isolated, lonely or anything like that. I’m happy being someone’s friend if they can respect my disorder, and not make offensive jokes about it or tell me to ‘get over it’. I wish I could get over it, but I can’t. I’ve tried to, and I can’t. Autism is a part of my life, and I will always accept that and be confident with that, and I hope that the people who know me will also accept that and treat me well. :-)

“Mate I’m not even gonna lie... I didn’t hear a word you just said” I’m sure my friends must be sick of hearing me say this by now...oops There’s a difference between hearing and listening and I don’t know if anyone can relate but I can be balls deep in a conversation and just switch off, it’s the worst when people ask you a question and you then have to try and throw together and answer to do with everything you just missed that doesn’t make you look like a tit. #DoILookAutisticYet ? If I deliver #AutismTraining and a speech to 100s people? If I author a #Asperger #Inspire book? No🌟Yet change my routine and overload me? If you see me during a shutdown? Yes! in a stereotypical manner, I visually stim and cant talk or walk and I become unable to process anything🤔 Yet what lots of people don’t understand is that Autism doesn’t have a ‘look’ and our disability effects much more than what is visible. 90% of My #Disability is hidden #Autism #Shutdowns caused by normal, daily ‘easy’ and ‘unstressful’ tasks; leaving no capabilities left over from consistent stress and overloads-despite my many abilities on good days💝 Just like many other #AutisticWomen I have learnt to mask my difficulties as a coping mechanism to protect myself from potential abuse and judgement. Even when I don’t look #Autistic, and even when people can’t see my #Disability, my disability still greatly impacts every second of my life in a huge variety of different ways- in wonderful , endearing & equally severe complex ways, that those without inside understanding couldn’t possibly understand; yet I would never change my autism for the world; I love my AspergerWorld after all🌟 . It makes me very frustrated that those of us who can pass as NT are expected to maintain that facade at all times. I rarely feel safe being visibly autistic in public, because I fear that people will judge me or make negative assumptions about my capabilities and intelligence. I want the misunderstanding of autistic behavior to end. I want all autistic people to be recognized as human beings with thoughts and emotions that matter. I want running and jumping and hand-flapping and fidgeting and echolalia to become commonplace, socially acceptable behaviors. Often when I'm in the hallways at school, I see fellow autistic students running and flapping and rocking their way to class. And my body aches to do the same. But I know people wouldn't understand, so I don't, and it hurts. I stim freely and openly at home, around my family members. I jump and flap around the house like a flightless bird. They accept me and speak to me completely normally when I do these things. I wish the rest of the world would do the same, for all autistic people. I don't want to hide anymore. ~Eden🐢 #autism #autistic #autismspectrum #autismacceptance #autismawareness #actuallyautistic #redinstead #neurodiversity #neuroqueer #aspergers #aspie #autisticselfadvocacy #autisticpride #autismpride #sensoryprocessing #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensorysensitivity #stimming #justkeepstimming #stimfreely #adhd #sensoryoverload #specialinterest #actuallyautisticmemes #functioninglabels

This is something that's been on my mind lately, because of how prominent and prevalent autistic people are in the climate movement. This one's to all the freaks and weirdos: I see you, I love you, I am you. Our strangeness, our obsessions, our refusal to accept irrational and arbitrary rules set by other people; all that stuff is exactly what the world needs right now. Those on the margins of society have a curious vantage point that allows us to understand aspects of society that those within the society are unaware of. As autistic people we are suited to be truth-tellers, whistleblowers, conscientious objectors, noncompliant, stubborn, uncompromising, passionate and determined to have our viewpoints respected & understood. We don't fit in, and that's a good thing. Let's keep on being ourselves. ~Eden🐢 #autism #autistic #autismspectrum #autismacceptance #autismawareness #actuallyautistic #redinstead #neurodiversity #neuroqueer #aspergers #aspie #autisticselfadvocacy #autisticpride #autismpride #sensoryprocessing #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensorysensitivity #stimming #justkeepstimming #stimfreely #adhd #sensoryoverload #specialinterest #actuallyautisticmemes

Things to remember: . - Not everyone has to like you, and you don’t have to like people if they do not treat you well. You have the right to own your life and your relationships. . -You don’t have to stoop to their level; 2 wrongs don’t make a right. . - Making mistakes is an important part of life; everyone does, and no one intends to do it. it’s possible to learn, grow and improve but it’s important to accept your mistakes and apologies. . -Don’t give up on yourself; you’re worth the effort and self care is not selfish. -Let your dreams be bigger than your fears. Look after yourself, because you are worthy of self love, even if you don’t believe it. . -You can never control what people have to say about you. However you can always try to be in control of how you react. . -Saying no is okay. You have that right . -Be mindful of your emotions and how much you allow your emotions to impact your actions onto others . -allow your actions to be louder than your words. Character is how you treat those who can do nothing for you. . -Tomorrow is a new day; you have the chance to start over and improve yourself and your life with every sunrise. Good luck💝 . #WednesdayWisdom #WednesdayMotivation #Autism #ActuallyAutistic #AspergerWorld

Aspietip: I was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder 4 and a half years ago. Before then, I waffled between prizing my individualism and feeling like I'd been born especially broken. What's more, when I didn't know that I was autistic, I thought my state of being broken (by NT standards) was unchangeable. This all changed for me post-diagnosis. Some may think that receiving a diagnosis is like being tatooed with a label that limits me and my belief in myself. Instead, for me, an ASD diagnosis has led me to see that I can flourish and grow as a neurodiverse individual. I'm not broken. I'm simply and complexly and wonderfully autistic. #autismpride #autumndays #autismacceptance

I wrote this a handful of years ago. It’s still the most important thing I have to say about autism. I’ve interacted with so many families, who upon receiving an autism diagnosis begin to research all of the ways to “undo” their child’s autism. It’s a natural response as a parent, but it breeds two problems: 1) it jerks your child from one cure to the next, increasing trauma and anxiety and 2) it tells them they are broken. We think we’re loving our kids by running hard towards a cure. I mean, we’re just trying to help them feel better right? Yes. I empathize with that, but there’s another way. Instead of seeing your child’s diagnosis as a mountain to be conquered, picture it as a garden—which you patiently sit in every day, nurturing it to grow. Connection, affirming words, patience, kindness, a secure accepting environment, healthy food and fresh air will bring your child to life. Trust me, they feel when you’re trying to change them. I personally believe that some negative behaviors we see with autism have a lot to do with whether or not the child feels loved as they are, for who they are. Autism is magical, special and free. The hard parts of autism (anxiety, poor health, problems with connection) can be nurtured into wholeness. Call me corny, but soft spoken words day by day, intentional connection and love are powerful and in my opinion, the only cures worth pursuing. #autism #lovingautism #writermama #autismmom #autismgirls #autismboys #autismdad #autismfamily #autismparenting #autismawareness #autismacceptance #autismlove #autismsupport #autismlife #autismteacher #autismmommy #autismproud #autismstrong #autismspectrum #autismsiblings #autismadvocate #autismsociety #autismsupermoms #autismmama #autismpride #autismfacts #autismkids #autismjourney #autismcommunity

(from @theaspielife) I was always complimented by astonished adults as a child who were baffled by my deep concern and understanding of events in the world (I've always been very passionate about social justice). They would call me "wise beyond your years" and "an old soul." At the same time, I watched- and genuinely enjoyed- My Little Pony, as an 8th grader. I currently watch Steven Universe (a fantastic show), and I still have a bunch of stuffed animals in my bed. My existence has always been a strange dichotomy of wise, but childlike. The more I think about it though, maybe those things go together. Childhood is associated with innocence, and wisdom is associated with knowledge. According to Taoist philosophy though, the wisest people are those who simply exist, enjoying life and being kind, as opposed to overthinking and worrying about everything, trying to control things that can't be controlled. I read a book 3 years ago called "The Tao Of Pooh" about Winnie The Pooh and how he embodies Taoist philosophy (Dory from Finding Nemo and Finding Dory is another good example), and the takeaway was that in many cases, naïvete is wisdom- I also find it fitting that the best examples of Taoist philosophy are characters in children's stories. So perhaps my innocence actually adds to my wisdom, rather than detracting from it. ~Eden🐢 #autism #autistic #autismspectrum #autismacceptance #autismawareness #actuallyautistic #redinstead #neurodiversity #neuroqueer #aspergers #aspie #autisticselfadvocacy #autisticpride #autismpride #sensoryprocessing #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensorysensitivity #stimming #justkeepstimming #stimfreely #adhd #sensoryoverload #specialinterest #actuallyautisticmemes #oldsoul #wisdom #taoism #thetaoofpooh #childlike

It means, all of their favorite things in a safe space just for them. Here in this corner, are all of Lily’s collected shells from the ocean, her two favorite marbles sets, a bucket of beads she likes to organize and reorganize and make jewelry with, a super fuzzy carpet she likes to do pretend snow angels on (holy sensory 😆), her favorite books and puzzles and of course her pink and purple hanging lights (hard to see during the day.) We used to have her favorite things spread out between the office, her bedroom and the living room, but her space kept getting interrupted by traffic and noise. This should be a practice for all moms and all children, but is especially vital for the mental and emotional health of children with unique needs. I take one day a week to snuggle with Lily. When her brother is at school, we ditch all devices and get big blankets and snacks and snuggle and sing and talk. We have face time and lots of eye contact, of course lots of smiles. I’ve seen the difference this makes. It builds a confidence in my girl that helps us get through another week. Tip: if you know you’re going to have a sitter come one day, make your snuggle day the day before the day you have to leave. This always makes things so much easier for her when I’m gone. Consistent intentional time of connection builds a lasting security in our children. #autism #lovingautism #writermama #momlife #mommyhood #autismawareness #autismmom #autismfamily #autismacceptance #autismlove #autismwarrior #autismparents #autismsupport #autismmommy #autismteacher #autismproud #autismstrong #autismspectrum #autismsiblings #autismadvocate #autismcommunity #autismkids #autismjourney #autismpride

I didn’t have a little list like this. My “manifestations” (I hate the word “symptom as it’s a holdover from the medical world and there’s nothing medically wrong with me) began as my layers and layers of masks slowly fell off (I had no say in the process, it just started happening). As we learned more about this new life, and getting a neurologist’s diagnosis, we were able to look retroactively and see signs of autism all over my life. They’d been there, hiding the whole time.
