A little over 20 years ago, I had a dream to become a professional bodybuilder. I'd been lifting weights for a few years using my dad's weight set. He had bought it with the hopes of getting fit but it held more clothes than weights, so I jumped on it and starting lifting.
Within a few months I started noticing some results, so did others. At school, one of my teachers who was in to track and field suggested I go and join a gym, so I did. Not really knowing how all the machines worked, I read bodybuilding magazines and watch VHS tapes (no internet back then) to get tips on routines and nutrition, it started working as my gains started to show.
One day the gym owner said to me, you should compete in a bodybuilding show, I like the idea, however he went on to say "I'll introduce you to Mark, he's competing soon too and would be a wealth of knowledge" And so I began training and learning with Mark and the difference was night and day.
Mark taught me what to eat, how much and what times to eat certain foods. Then came the training, heavy, high intensity training, each workout was grueling. I think I vomited after every leg work out for the first 6 weeks! Then came the mindset, visualisation and the discipline and resilience i need to be focused every single day and follow the plan set out each week leading up to the day, and the result... I won..
Actually, not only did I win but when I showed up to the event, no teenagers had registered so I had to jump up a division and enter the under 21 junior division, but they were no match, I beat them all.
In reflection, when I analyse what factors affected the outcome in the situation, the thing that sticks out is the difference between a coach and a mentor. They both serve a purpose however one outweighs the other by far. See the magazines and videos were like my coaches, they taught me enough to get started but to really understand what was need to become successful, i needed something more, I needed someone who didn't just know the theory, they knew to practical, they'd lived it.
