I’m Amanda, founder of @icanmake_shoes 👠, a London-based shoemaking school for beginners. It was founded in 2010 with zero experience & zero capital out of a desire to make my own shoes from home. Fast forward to today & we’ve grown organically into a 6-figure company.
I’m a native Aussie who moved to London in 2009 & combined my training in Business & Marketing with my, admittedly, limited experience in shoemaking to create the school. Within my first 6 months of launch, I was selected by ASOS as one of 15 businesses to launch @asosmarketplace.
Recently, I founded a publishing company, launched my first shoemaking book & travelled to the Philippines with the @britishcouncil to represent the British footwear industry on a social impact trip.
My method of shoemaking & bringing the art into the home craft space has transformed how people view shoemaking. It’s allowed beginners to turn their kitchen tables into their workshop. A concept never shared before in the industry.
The BIPC’s #InnovatingForGrowth programme helped me to take a step back and look at the bad habits I’d created in my business and restructure. Within 6 months of completing, I’d tripled the size of my team and doubled the size of our office.
Outside the office, you’re most likely to find me in a garden centre. I love plants, my house looks like a jungle 🌱
A book which really impacted me is In my shoes by Tamara Mellon. I thought I was aspiring to have a glamorous company and that once you reach a certain status things become easy. After reading, I realised that no business is glamorous. Everyone has to do their tax, deal with problems and juggle their personal/professional life. Once I realised this, I was free to just grow the business.
Podcasts have more of an impact on me though, I’m obsessed with @howibuiltthisnpr. I love to listen to entrepreneurs share their successes and failures, it helps get perspective on issues I’m facing.
My 2020 resolution’s to plan my workdays in 1-hour increments the night before. This increases my productivity massively. I’m also going to meditate in the mornings. This helps me keep a light-hearted happy attitude throughout the day.
