Jessica Shafer is one of only 14 women to become a Surfman in the #CoastGuard and became the first female commanding officer of Coast Guard Station Cape Disappointment in 2018, 141 years after the station first opened. Lt. Shafer is an elite lifeboat pilot, having earned coxswain, heavy weather coxswain, tactical coxswain and surfman qualifications, as well as multiple boarding officer certifications.
Lt. Shafer on why she joined the #USCG: “The benefits were unbelievable...so that was the appeal, plus the outdoors, and the physical nature of it. Seeing the country, and serving the country. Volunteerism was a big part of it also.
