2018 marked a special year for the Flying Scotsman, as it celebrated the 10th anniversary. London and Edinburgh were to be the start and finish locations for the event, just like the original in 2009, and the 94 crews taking part in Britain's premier rally for vintage motor cars were in for a treat. 🏁 The 10th edition was flagged away from the Brooklands Museum with a relaxed run through the Home Counties providing a gentle introduction, and allowing crews to slowly build a head of steam for the days ahead. Day Two's route would continue north into the East Midlands to take in a series of exciting new challenges before swinging east through the quiet yet magnificent Lincolnshire Wolds. After a comfortable night halt close to the majestic Humber Bridge, the gradients increased through Saturday, as the spectacular moors and dales of Yorkshire welcomed the competitors. The special Anniversary Edition was rounded off with a day of splendid moorland motoring through the wilds of Northumberland and the Scottish Borders before a triumphal arrival at the The Balmoral Hotel, Edinburgh, appropriately close to Waverley Railway Station, the original destination of our illustrious steam powered namesake. If you’re a fan of vintage NASCAR – or if you or your kids loved the movie ‘Cars’ – you’ll know all about The Fabulous Hudson Hornet. For NASCAR aficionados it was the racing team that dominated the series from 1951-54, for the rest of you it’s the old blue race car voiced by Paul Newman that kept Lightning McQueen honest in the animated kiddie flick. Powering those cars to victory was the 308ci (5 Litre), Twin H-Power equipped flathead six. It wasn’t massively powerful, though 170hp was pretty decent for a stock engine back then, but it out-torqued all the opposition with over 270 lb/ft of the twisty stuff. As Enzo Ferrari once said, “Horsepower sells cars, torque wins races.” That could have been Hudson’s motto. Unfortunately quite literally, as despite that other great epithet – “Win on Sunday, sell on Monday” – Hudson’s racing success failed to translate into sales and the company merged with Nash-Kelvinator in 1954 to become the American Motors Corporation, the Hudson name finally disappearing for good in 1957. This Fabulous 1953 example was driven by NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon at the 2019 Goodwood Revival.

Rover 3500, P6 (3+3a-c) – a short story about its V8 engine that made it “an executive power car”💪🤵💪 ========================= (1970, Rover 3500, Mk1 (P6) ... The short story about the Rover 3500 and its V8 – extracts: In ‘63, the British carmaker Rover was looking for a new engine to power its top-of-the-line cars. The existing Rover P5 saloon had a somewhat elderly 2,995cc F-head straight six that was too heavy and too thirsty for its modest output, so Rover was exploring five- and six-cylinder versions of the new inline four from the Rover P6. But then ... one day, when Rover’s managing director, Martin-Hurst, was visiting Mercury Marine (US) and their president, Carl Kiekhaefer, about licensing Rover’s new gas turbine engine for marine applications, Martin-Hurst noticed (or, in some versions of the story, literally stumbled over🥴) a Buick aluminum V8 that Kiekhaefer had intended to install in a power boat and Martin-Hurst got an idea: he wanted to use it in the Rovers, since he was sure that the aluminum V8 could transform the performance of the Rovers. The V8 was only slightly heavier than the existing P6’s four-cylinder engine, significantly lighter than the P5’s F-head six, and dramatically more powerful than either. And Martin-Hurst ended up making a deal by early ‘65, which gave Rover the rights to manufacture and use the aluminum V8 engine. But although Buick threw in copies of its technical data and a number of unused production engines, Rover had very little prior experience with V8s or vee engines in general, but Martin-Hurst had “a lucky day”, since the engine’s lead designer, Joe Turlay, was about to retire, Martin-Hurst arranged to hire him as a consultant and move him to England to oversee the establishment of Rover’s new V8 production line🤓 The V8 was first added to the Rover P5 (then badged 3½ Litre) in September ‘67, offering 161 hp – fully 50 hp more than the much heavier F-head six. And in ‘68 the aluminum V8 went into the Rover P6 (then badged Rover 3500) – as the one in my photos ... an “executive power car” was born💪🤵💪 Disclaimer: I might not know the owner/car, so I can’t guarantee the period originality of the car in my photos)
