20 regions worth exploring in Costa Rica - No. 9: Western Osa Peninsula & Islands.
This part of the gorgeous Osa Peninsula is barely accessible by land, meaning it is still a sanctuary for life, preserved from massive development. The region and its islands are also known to have been used by pirates in the past as a refuge to hide treasures along the Pacific Coast... Now it is a treasure in itself with this rare unspoiled beauty, and the best coastal trek in Costa Rica - from Bahía Drake to San Pedrillo. Along this 2-day journey, different river crossings await you, including the scenic Río Claro, and hiking in the tropical heat is rewarded by swimming on secluded coves and beaches, such as Cocalito, Las Caletas, Danta, San Josecito, or Poor Man's Paradise. Visible from the shore, Isla del Caño abounds with coral species and marine life. It is definitely worth snorkeling in its waters, but apparently it is nothing compared to the lonely Isla del Coco, a paradise for scuba diving and jurassic expeditions. If you don't have time to get to this World Heritage Site, you can console yourself by exploring the heart of the smaller island, with relics of pre-Columbian civilizations, including the mysterious stone spheres. This region has definitely not revealed all its secrets yet!
