When we bring central importance to skin microbiota and understand its fundamental role in supporting healthy and balanced skin, we can no longer isolate ourselves away from nature- from her soil, her air, her flowing waters, her flora and fauna and most importantly her microbes.
This intimate contact and exposure to nature is also vital for gut microbiota health.
Why? Because the natural environment is the most abundant, diverse and vital source of the microbes our skin and bodies need to function optimally and in harmony with our environment.
The microbiota is the software that bridges us with our environment. It is a vehicle that feeds information to our skin and body on the nano level. This information is vital for homeostasis and balance to take place.
Without this software and this information, our skin and body cannot sense and interact with its environment effectively.
When it is cut off from its microbial environment, our skin and bodies has no choice but to take on the defensive instead of harmonising with its environment.
It has no way of knowing for sure what is friend and what is foe. Thus, in its quest to protect and sustain our lives, it treats what it does not recognise as foe, even in trace or tiny amounts.
This is one way allergies come about. This is our body in survival mode and not thriving mode because in order to thrive, we must be in harmony and flow with our environment.
The more we expose and be in physical touch with the natural environment us, the more we educate our skin/body/immune system to recognise friend from foe.
And the friendly symbiotic microbes are allowed to stay within us and support us so we may thrive. It truly is a partnership between our skin/body and the microbes that forms the microbiota.
Both autonomous parties are empowered to act in their best interest and harmony and balance is maintained as long as those interests align.
When we are empowered, we become active and wholesome participants of nature. We align more readily and more naturally with our natural environment because our skin and bodies are a willing and harmonious seeking host to nature as well.
