We’re throwing it back to hurricane clean-up last year when we found this hickory horned devil. This electric blue, wiggling creature is the larval form of the regal moth. While they do feature horns and can get to be as large as a hot dog, fear not! They are harmless. They are most often seen after coming down from trees to look for a place to pupate. Pupation is the final stage of transformation before adulthood. #tbt #kingsleyplantation #timucuanpreserve

Kingsley Plantation, a short ferry ⛴ ride away from Hanna Park. An important part of history. Check the website for closures due to restoration. — This was only my second stamp in my National Parks 🏞 book, after Caroline Fort. My son and I love history. But while there, we truly felt haunted. Please, no political statements. There was just a feeling in our guts that we couldn’t quite explain. — If you are in the Jacksonville area, look into visiting — “Kingsley Plantation is open seven days a week, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., except on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Years Day. Admission is free. You can explore the grounds at Kingsley Plantation, which include the slave quarters, barn, waterfront, plantation house, kitchen house, and interpretive garden. The visitor contact station/bookstore is located in a 1920s building adjacent to the plantation buildings.” https://www.nps.gov/timu/learn/historyculture/kp_visiting.htm

The dock at #kingsleyplantation is covered with oysters. These creatures are considered a keystone species, oysters provide habitat for many marine species. The hard surfaces of oyster shells and the nooks between the shells provide places where a host of small animals can live. Hundreds of animals, such as sea anemones, barnacles, and hooked mussels, inhabit oyster reefs. Many of these animals are prey to larger animals, including fish, such as striped bass, black drum and croakers. #foodweb #oysters #keystonespecies #timucuanpreserve #timucuanparks

Here is a bit of underrepresented local modern history to kick off #womenshistorymonth. Did you know that the first female African-American president of #Atlanta's @spelman_college is from #Jacksonville? . Raised in Sugar Hill, Johnnetta Betsch Cole is the great granddaughter of Abraham Lincoln Lewis, one of Florida's first black millionaires. Her 7th great grandparents were Zephaniah Kingsley and Wolof princess Anna Madgigine Jai. Enrolling in college at the young age of 15, Cole's successful career as an anthropologist, educator, museum director and college president also includes roles as the president of Bennett College (2002 - 2007) and the Director of the Smithsonian's @nmafa (2009 - 2017) . #kingsleyplantation #womenshistory #tellthefullhistory #thejaxsonmag #florida #floridahistory #thisplacematters #history #jax #jaxhistory #africanamericanhistory #ilovehistory #southernhistory #unknownjax #untoldjax #blackhistoryflorida #blackhistorymonth #igersjax #womenshistory #women #blackwomen #ambition #herstory

This weekend at #kingsleyplantation, a part of the National Park system on #fortgeorgeisland Florida, my Auntie Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole will be the keynote speaker at Kingsley Heritage Celebration along with the #GullahGeechee ring shouters. Kingsley Plantation is our ancestral home in the new world as it was once the home of planter, trader, smuggler, and slave owner Zephaniah Kingsley and his full blooded African wife, Anna Kingsley, born Anta Madjiguene N’diaye, a linguere, or princess of royal lineage from the Wolof kingdom of present day Senegal. They are my 8th great grandparents. Dr. Cole is a dynamic and inspiring speaker. It is sure to be an amazing day!

Jacksonville, FL - 1878 - Governor Napoleon Bonaparte Broward House | “The Broward House is a fine example of the Folk Victorian style of architecture, popular between 1870 and 1910. With lacy brackets on porch posts, filigreed balustrades, and a third-story cupola above a widow's walk, the structure was built in 1878 as part of ‘Pilot Town,’ a community home to many of the bar pilots who worked the St. Johns bar—a shifting sandbar located at the mouth of the St. Johns River. Bar pilots were essential for navigating ocean-going vessels through the shallow waters. The building has not been greatly altered or changed from its original design. Licensed as a bar pilot in 1883, Broward purchased the house in 1897 as a summer residence for him and his family. The residence remained in the Broward family until 1996.” - tpl.org | #jacksonville #jacksonvillefl #fortgeorge #ftgeorge #fortgeorgeisland #ftgeorgeisland #timucuanpreserve #oldflorida #nrhp #nationalregisterofhistoricplaces #thisplacematters #savingplaces #historicpreservation
