First day back at the gym in a month since the crazy onset of illness in my house. Honestly, I didn’t want to go. I wanted to stay comfortable in my pajamas, reading, writing, and meditating. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I also had a meeting scheduled with my trainer. I love him...but I was afraid to face the, “Where have you been?” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The thing is, though, growth doesn’t come from being comfortable. Growth comes when you challenge patterns that have kept you stuck. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ One pattern of mine that I challenged today was showing up and being honest about being scared to come back. My trainer, though, was welcoming and helped me set new goals of consistency. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Instead of thinking I had to go “all out”, and that if I couldn’t go “all out” that I should skip it until I “felt like it,” I was able to reframe it as, “I’m going to show up on Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday and be gentle with myself in the process.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We often aren’t going to feel like changing patterns. That’s why they’re patterns! We aren’t going to feel comfortable in change at first. I am so happy to announce I just received my 200 hours yoga teacher training certification as one more tool to add to my teachings! Nobody believes me when I say I am an introvert, but I am...despite all the hugs, silliness, and laugher, deep within, there is a little child who used to be mortified of teaching a group class. After going through very intense and challenging 3 months of training; keeping up with my own constant yoga practice which I have been doing for almost 7 years (except for when I injured my knee); forcing my family members, friends and clients to endure some pretty messy and terrifying classes (sorry guys, thank you so much for the support); my confidence in front of a classroom has grown so much! Each time I teach, I feel more in love with sharing this amazing practice with others! Basically, when I practice and teach any type of movement to my clients, I get into this zone where my concept of time almost disappears (the reason why I am always timing myself and setting up alarms...), I suddenly become one with what I am doing or teaching, and it becomes like a dance personalized for each of my clients... I am finally getting into this zone when I am teaching yoga...time disappears and I am suddenly leading everyone into this beautiful flow. Even if sometimes, with a shaky novice voice, I hear my authentic voice coming alive little by little. Like anything in life, including the practice of yoga itself, teaching yoga is a journey that takes time and patience. It’s been a joy to share my love for yoga and to learn and hold space for each of my brothers and sisters (that is how close we have become after all) from my training over the past few months. I will miss you all so much! I’m far from perfect, but I will continue to learn as I practice and teach. And if you ever take a class with me, and If I ever mess up in class, stumble upon my words or just mix your right with your left side, I will remember that I am a yogi too, I will breathe, smile, and just go with the flow! We are (like our soul or ‘twin counterparts) illuminating what is hidden, acting as rocket fuel for our profound awareness. I do this in my sessions, we do this for each other. I do not believe in consequences or rewards (in most cases). Rather, I wholeheartedly agree with @janenelsen of @positivediscipline that “kids do better when they feel better.” I refuse to subscribe to the claim that kids are consciously “choosing to be bad” or that they are “deciding to misbehave,” and I disagree with the manipulation that occurs through the use of rewards. As I often like to do, let’s apply this notion to an adult situation. Imagine you had a huge fight with your partner last night, you’re running late to work, and you have a really important presentation today that you’re feeling really nervous about. You run into the coffee shop to fuel yourself for a long day ahead, and the line is super long. You finally get your coffee and discover your order is wrong, but there’s not enough time to change it because you’re already late. When you finally get to work, someone accidentally bumps into you and spills your coffee all over you. Do you think the presentation will go well? Probably not as well as it would if the morning had been more smooth! As adults, it’s quite obvious that we perform better when we feel better. But we often forget to apply this logic to kids, too. In the above scenario, there’s also no guarantee that you’d be able to perform better if for instance your boss told you right before the presentation that you’d get a bonus (reward) if it went well. And you might even do worse if your boss threatened to fire or demote you if it didn’t go well (consequence). The underlying problem wasn’t that you weren’t being paid enough or weren’t motivated enough to do a good job, it was that the morning was stressful and you were tired. If kids are hungry, tired, stressed, worried, sad, frustrated, bored, etc., we simply can’t expect them to “be good” 100% of the time, and no amount of rewards or consequences will change the underlying problem(s). This is why it is so important to have a strong connection with your students so that you are able to discover what the underlying problem is, which ultimately starts the process of finding a solution! And solutions are a much more effective long-term fix than any reward or consequence. -KN🌻

7/100 days of happiness down! . Heart fed by warm moments with friends. Softened the tense, defensive barriers to life stress. By the uncommon Portland winter sun (!) and the gorgeous rays that spanned the sky and stayed light past 4:45...A Big Deal at this latitude and grayness. The cool air feels so fresh and gorgeous. Spent post-study downtime reading through a book on one of my favorite visionary painters, #HilmaafKlint. And when the hard rain started this evening, had a little baking project. I have cut down on meat the last few months-and #baking, too 😱- but this ham and cheesy pastry braid sounded tooo good. Swipe for sizzling cheese puddles. . . One week down. Focusing my bleak, world-weary ass on happiness. It’s a fun trip. . . It coincidentally happened to be a week that put me through the ringer (and I’m sure y’all as well) —and this little addition to practice, pause and receive/offer/share moments of easy happiness was all the more nourishing. Every little bit counts. . Any tiny opening for a breath, a laugh, a lightening matters. I’ve done it. CAN YOUR HAIR TELL US YOUR NUTRITION STATUS? 💇🏽‍♀️ // Yes! And a whole lot more. It’s amazing what a small sample of 2 inches of hair from the nape of your neck can tell us about how well you’ve been absorbing nutrients for the past 3 months, and how well your cells are holding onto those nutrients. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The nutrients you eat are absorbed from your food and deposited in your cells for storage, including your hair cells.
