[ THIS ENGLAND OF MINE ]
3/3. England series.
This wraps up my England series (for now). It's my favourite of the three, but the more I read it the more it sounds like I dislike England... but I don't! I'm just very conscious to see it for what it really is. The good, the bad and the ugly.
- ' scars unrecognised' -
We're not taught a true picture of our own history in schools, nor is it discussed broadly in popular media. Yet, constantly and throughout history England has consistently been a force which thrusts itself upon the world using overtly violent methods or a controlling form of capitalism, 'democracy' or moral/religious code.
I was once in Dublin with work, and after our meeting went for drinks with a client. I was completely embarrassed to learn of the time he had spent in school learning about Irish & British history as part of his curriculum. It hit me that I had never been taught this, nor (at the time) had I learnt of British atrocities in India or Africa, or many other 'methods' used in the name of Empire.
- 'our bloodied shores beguile' -
England beckons people to its shores with riches, democracy, law & order, education, safety, and the idea of liberalism ...before leaving its mark. History teaches us it's beautiful yet deadly. Rich in history and blind to its past. It's both Proud and Ashamed. Rich and Poor. Honest and Deceitful.
- 'England is not torn' -
To say England has been torn in two is to suggest it was once not. This is untrue. I concede we are divided in many ways, but we haven't been torn apart. There is no neat separation of two groups. Everything is always in the grey area. I think this is an important difference, as to heal divisions we must accept we are all in it together. The good, the bad and the ugly.
My question is how can England, or any other country become better unless it recognises and accepts its truth, and it's history - ?
