I Surrender. 🙏🏻📿🌻 Yoga Sutra 1.23
Isvara Pranidhana, pronounced ‘Ish-va-ra-pra-nid-hah-na’ is the very last of the Niyamas of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. •
The term ‘Isvara Pranidhana’ is made up of two words; Isvara, which translates as ‘Supreme Being’, ‘God’, ‘Brahman’, ‘Ultimate Reality’ or ‘True Self’ and Pranidhana, which means ‘fixing’. In most translations of this Niyama, we’re advised to ‘surrender’ to this Supreme Being or higher self, which in essence means cultivating a deep and trusting relationship with the universe, and making each action an offering to something bigger than us. •
Isvara Pranidhanacan be thought of as ‘offering up the results of one’s actions to the divine’, or perhaps to humanity. In this way, our asana practice becomes less about what it can do for us, but how we can help ourselves stay healthy enough to help the world around us. •
I mention this Yoga Sutra because it can feel difficult within the four walls of your home or the four edges of your mat to see any means for extending the kind of service this world needs right now. •
It becomes easy to see all the ways in which you are not, can not, and do not. But what if in this moment you shifted the mindset into the many ways you are, can, and will do. •
Your first offering may be the simple act of being in stillness. At this moment that looks a lot like staying home, remaining 6’ away from others when you must travel out, refraining from ‘meeting up’. This small act helps those who are fighting on the frontlines receive a small gift of time ⏰ from you. And time is something we all can offer.
You can also work to stay healthy. This means sleep, hydration, exercise. All the things we know but subconsciously put off for another day. Today is that day. If you stay healthy, you have more to offer this world than if you get sick. You cannot serve from an empty cup. •
In the Upanishads, the word Isvara means ‘a state of collective consciousness’, which tells us – we are united as a collective energy in this world. Your actions have a direct impact on the whole. We can change the energy when we begin with personal healing.
