Practicing gratitude has been shown in multiple studies to provide several benefits to the person actively practicing it. These benefits fall under emotional, social, personality, career, and health benefits. Specific examples include feeling happier, improving relationships, enhancing optimism, reduce impatience and raise decision-making, and improve your sleep. With numerous well-documented benefits, the question becomes how do we actively and consciously practice gratitude? Here are three easy ways you can. 1️⃣ Write someone a letter (handwritten, email, text) where you express your gratitude for them as a person and the role they play in your life. 2️⃣ Sit quietly and think to yourself three things your grateful for in your life, and WHY you’re thankful for those things. Can range from people, places you’ve been, things you’ve done, or simply having a roof over your head and/or living another day. 3️⃣ Tell someone verbally how thankful you are for them. Can be done over the phone with a family member or a long-lost friend, or in person. No matter what, it’s highly likely that you and the person on the receiving end will walk away feeling better. Now that my training level isn't quite where it was before I was pregnant 😅and my joints have loosened a bit, I'm experiencing soreness more frequently. I wanted to share some things I love doing for soreness. 1️⃣Foam rolling : using an object to massage your muscle tissue. Can be done before or after a workout. You can do this anywhere from 2 min. on a specific area to 20 minutes for a total body routine. I've been foam rolling at least twice a week. 2️⃣Active recovery days for when you're experiencing mild/moderate soreness: An active recovery day is where you're still going to get in some light movement- for example, hopping on the treadmill or bike and doing a light 20-30 minute session. Nothing too strenuous. 3️⃣Total rest: Necessary for recovery and also for those days when you wake up and are sore to the touch. Rest days won't set you back. They will speed up your recovery. 4️⃣Stretching: Your muscles might be tight after a workout and getting them back to full range of motion before or after a workout may be a good thing. This is when I'd recommend active stretching - things like lunges, high knees, arm circles, etc. I prefer active stretching to static stretching, like holding your face to your knee with your leg outstretched. 5️⃣Sleep: Can't emphasize this enough. Nobody is "above" sleep. Aim for 7-9 hours each night. 6️⃣I have LOVED my massage gun- gives a deep tissue massage and helps quicken the healing process of muscles by increasing blood flow and oxygen to those parts of the body. Helps to suppress the accumulation of lactic acid as well. 6️⃣Nutrition: nutrition is key for recovery. Not just protein for tissue replenishment and carbs for fuel, but a balanced combination of healthy carbs, proteins, fats, and vitamins/minerals. 7️⃣There are other things you may see elite athletes and people hitting the gym frequently use: Normatec, E-Stim, cold immersion, saunas, float tanks, etc. As you can see, there are lots of things we can do to improve our recovery time, but know that as your body adjusts to the "load," you'll find yourself getting less sore, and less frequently. SUPPLEMENTS. My two daughters have caught a little cold so of course, every one in the family will have a turn! But not always! I’ve been supplementing with vitamin C, echinacea, black elderberry syrup and have made a roller ball with essential oils which include lemon, on guard and oregano. These have worked for me in the past to stop the spread or the severity of the virus and of course extra sleep. What are your tips for combating viruses?
