Set your course by the stars, not by the lights of every passing ship!
I was in a live stream of one of the very successful photographers, whose work I truly admire last night, and somebody asked the following: “What can I do to get more followers?” We have all had the thought but I have some opinions on the matter. First, true art at its core, should be pursued as an expression for the artist. Like a writer or singers voice, photographers, cinematographers and painters have a voice too, but it is through their final works, that their voice must shine through.
While taking inspiration from other artists is a great thing to do, in order to learn new techniques, you should not pander to create what an audience will like, you should build a following of people who genuinely like your style. All of you who follow my work are always engaged with my work, providing feedback and messages of support for my “moody style”. But I shoot this way because I like it, and those of you that have stuck around seem to enjoy it too! So my point is, walk your own direction and let people join you along the way, a legitimate and dedicated following is way better than just a large number, it’s a community. I love y’all! Stay safe and stay home!
Keep shooting, keep clicking!
