I’ve received a lot of kind and supportive messages about my recent trip to the hospital. Again, while reading them I experienced a confusing range of emotions, from love and happiness down to self-pity and a puzzlement over, "How did I become this person, the one receiving the well-wishes and the get-well-soons? Will this ever end?," sometimes bordering on self-hatred and shame over even having even expressed myself in the first place. "Why did I even say anything publicly? What am I doing it for?" I know these are distorted thoughts being processed (incorrectly) through the lens of anxiety, but it's true and it's real; just as real as the continuing physical pain in my back from the spinal or the continuing pain in oh-so-many buttholes (TMI haaahaha). Sometimes it's easier to get stuck in the dark instead of activating the light. . So thank you for the continued love, even when I struggle to love myself and this scarred body of mine. Does performing cardio on an empty stomach lead to greater fat loss results? ⁣ ⁣ This idea likely came about due to previous studies showing that aerobic exercise performed in the fasted state increased fat oxidation during the session. However, when looking at the scope of an entire day, burning more fat during a workout means you burn more carbohydrate throughout the remainder of the day - and conversely, burning more carbs during a workout leads to more fat oxidation in the post-exercise period. ⁣ ⁣ This age-old myth has been put to the test in several research studies. @bradschoenfeld et al. (2014) looked at the differences in fasted vs. fed states in 20 healthy young women and found no significant differences in body composition changes between the two groups. Further, a 2017 systematic review and meta-analysis concluded that “weight loss and fat loss from exercise is more likely to be enhanced through creating a meaningful caloric deficit over a period of time, rather than exercising in fasted or fed states”. Keep in mind, however, that only 5 studies were included in this analysis, and further research is warranted. ⁣ ⁣ To date, then, the evidence seems to suggest that there is no inherent benefit to doing cardio in the fasted state. Make sure you are consistently eating in a calorie deficit if fat loss is the goal. ⁣ ⁣ If cardio fits within the context of your body composition goals, then have it. (Of course, the topic of when and how much cardio to sprinkle into your fitness regimen cannot be overlooked, and that’s something I will cover in time in a separate post.) If you find that knocking it out first thing in the morning before consuming a meal helps with your overall consistency and adherence, it’s probably a great option for you. But if doing it later in the day works better with your schedule and your preferences, that doesn’t mean you’ll see inferior results per se. ⁣credit @soheefit@eltmethod

GUACAMOLE ✨ I’ve been making my favourite guacamole non stop this summer. It is the perfect snack, starter or side dish. Whilst I don’t always have the time or resources to make my own food from scratch, when I do I really enjoy the process. This is such a super simple and tasty dip that is perfect for your Australia Day BBQ or Hottest 100 picnic! Also, I’m quite partial to a corn chip, so any excuse to break open a bag really! ⁣ ⁣ The recipe:⁣ 🔅2 avocados, flesh removed. ⁣ 🔅1/2 bunch coriander leaves, roughly chopped.⁣ 🔅1 lime, juiced.⁣ 🔅1/2 red onion, diced.⁣ 🔅2 tomatoes, roughly chopped.⁣ 🔅Salt and pepper, to taste.⁣ 🔅Ground cumin, to taste.⁣ ⁣ Mash avocado into a bowl. Looking for a healthy treat? Checkout this yummy Ombré Choco Carmel Smoothie topped with cacao nibs, coconut flakes, and bliss balls 🤤🍫 by @nutriholist. . . . Recipe Serving size 2 2 cups frozen cauliflower (raw or steamed) 1 banana 1/4 cup coconut flakes 2 tbsp almond butter 2 tbsp flax seeds 3 tbsp chia seeds 2 tbsp collagen (or hemp hearts) 1 tsp maca powder 1 tsp cinnamon 1 1/2 cups non-diary milk 2 tbsp raw cacao powder 1. Add all ingredients to the blender except for the cacao powder. Divide 1/3 of the mix between 2 glasses. 2. Add 1 tbsp of cacao powder to the blender and blend for the second layer. Pour half of the mix on top of the previous layer. 3. Add the final tbsp of cacao powder, blend and pour on top to fill the glasses. 4.
